Shipping Scams - Be aware

Since I purchased Offix Edge over three years ago, I have seen quite a few scams related to shipping. I know for a fact I have “saved” at least four people from significant financial loss.

  1. The most recent and insidious one is the “Package Notification Text” scam, sometimes called “smishing”. Some consumers have been getting texts and links that look like they are from major delivery carriers. Do not click on any tracking or address verification links until you have verified the email or text address. Usually it is clear when the address is spoofed - such as misspellings, strange punctuation, really long email/text addresses. The major carriers will not ask for any personal or financial information related to a delivery. Clicking on the link could allow to scammers to access your personal information. Be sure to block these numbers.

  2. Do not send cash. For one, it is illegal to send cash and currency through all major carriers. For another, legitimate charities and vendors will not ask for cash through the mail since they are aware it is illegal.

  3. When making eBay or other online sales, be aware of buyers who ask you to ship express or overnight. Sometimes this means they will receive the product before their money transfer clears. They can then cancel the transfer, meaning you have just lost your item and the cost of expensive shipping.
